Description

Rhizome erect, short and thin; rhizome scales pale brown, ovate, to 3.5 x 1.5 mm, entire, apex tapering to a point, clathrate. Fronds tufted, proliferous. Stipe 5–18 cm long, with few to many scales similar to those of rhizome but decreasing in size. Lamina herbaceous, narrowly elliptic in outline, 12–29 x 3–10 cm, 2-pinnatifid or 3-pinnatifid, proliferous just below terminal pinna; basal pinnae slightly or not reduced, terminal pinna gradually decrescent; glabrous or with few minute scales on lower surface. Pinnae in 13–21 pairs, ovate, to 5 x 1.2 cm, obtuse, with a single large acroscopic lobe to 12 x 7 mm and slightly 2–3-lobed at apex, main pinna crenate to almost lobed with teeth to 2 mm. Rhachis green, narrowly winged, with very few dark brown clathrate lobed scales to 0.7 mm. Sori 8–20 per pinna, linear, along the veins, 1–5 mm long; indusium membranous, entire, 0.3 mm wide.

Notes

The well-developed acroscopic pinna lobe is characteristic for this species.

Udzungwense: type specimen of this fern is from the Udzungwa Mts, Tanzania.
